Lead author Jialin Wei from the School of Biological Sciences highlights, "Despite separate evolutionary paths, insects, worms, and vertebrates have repeatedly gained and lost similar genes to adapt to life on land."

But here's where it gets controversial... While certain biological functions like water regulation and metabolism evolved independently, they did so in remarkably similar ways across diverse lineages. This suggests that some adaptations are not only essential but also predictable.

Dr Jordi Paps Monserrat, Associate Professor in Genomics and Evolution, adds, "Animals with partial aquatic reliance share more adaptations, while fully terrestrial lineages showcase divergent strategies. Each lineage's unique innovations reflect the influence of ecology, physiology, and chance."

Dr Marta Álvarez-Presas, project co-lead, explains, "Our study identifies three major waves of terrestrialisation over 487 million years, from successful arthropods to land snails. It offers a glimpse into the potential outcomes if we could rewind and replay life's tape."

Some genetic adaptations are strikingly predictable, recurring in response to the challenges of land life. Others, however, are contingent, shaped by the unique circumstances of each lineage.
